Letter from the MDT to Mayor Kadas
David Galt. Director of the Montana Department of Transportation

February 2 2004

The Honorable Mike Kadas
Mayor of Misosula
435 Ryman Street
Missoula, MT 59802

Subject: West Broadway restriping project

Dear Mayor Kadas, I'm writing as a follow-up to our meeting on January 13, 2004 regarding the West Broadway restriping project. I understand there are some fears and uncertainties associated with the striping proposed for West Broadway so I'd like to answer some questions and reiterate the commitments this department is willing to undertake:

  • We will monitor all the traffic on the project for a reasonable period (three to six months) after the changes are made. If traffic shows a significant decrease or the project does not yield a safer road, MDT's maintenance staff will remove the pavement markings and stripe the road back to the existing condition.
  • If the city elects to amend it's decision and cancel the project, we will require the city to repay the amount spent for project development (approximately $140,000)

It was a pleasure meeting with you and we appreciate all you do for Missoula.

Sincerely,
David A Galt
Director
